banana milshakes, here I come!

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Strokes: According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine", eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%"

2005 Finalists - Porting games has never been easier

2005 Finalists: "Unique technology and a highly effective production process enables Beenox to help publishers bring more games to more markets, at a lower cost and without the usual hassles associated with cross-platform game development. Beenox's port of The Incredibles, for example, only required an average of four people to produce the 25 versions of the game in 13 different languages.

'Where the biggest publishers saw a problem, we saw an opportunity - and seized it', exclaims Gadbois."

The largest Oracle application in the country

2004 Finalists: "Even though the Oracle Financials application is well-proven, the magnitude of its implementation in Ontario made IFIS the largest Oracle application project in North America. Replacing all the financial systems across the province with one integrated system, and dealing with the number and complexity of interfaces required to enable compatibility with existing sub-systems, required considerable expertise and innovation. To accomplish this, government and private-sector staff worked side by side. IBM was engaged as the prime contractor of a consortium that also included Oracle, Sierra, and RFH Associates to provide the project management, business solution and technical expertise in enterprise- wide systems; and the government?s own corporate Information & Information Technology (I&IT) organization played a key role in ensuring IFIS consistency with Ontario?s e-government strategy."

Why Google's Management doesn't really matter

"But, in terms of the power of the business model, look at, for example, Messrs Page and Brin, who created the ubiquitous product Google. This is a great product, but I believe there are at least 100,000 executive managers in the world qualified to run the company. There are probably at least 10,000 who could sit in the CEO chair, and management?s performance wouldn?t change a whit.

I disagree with Bill Cara on this. The CEO (or figurehead) of a company provides a layering of personality and influence on its executives, who gets hired, and who invests in the company. It also provides the brain (or at least the head) of the company.

If a CEO or a management team doesn't have qualities that influence people, the people following them won't be influenced.

If Sergei & Larry weren't the search engine gurus that they're cracked out to be, they wouldn't have taken Google off the ground. Sorry Mark Cuban, but IceRocket ain't no Google, and I'm pretty sure you didn't do your PHD in search engine algorithms. However, you'd make a good sports team owner, superfan.

If Bill Gates wasn't a cutthroat businessman, technology prophet, and also the stereotypical geek, his business wouldn't be doing so well. I don't think he would work as the head of McDonalds, though he could fit in with the Simpsons pimply-faced teen image. (from the way the Pirates of Silicon Valley movie portrayed him anyway)

If Warren Buffett didn't have the respect of his peers & the qualities of being frugal, straightforward, honest, and trustworthy, he would not be the head of the cult of value-investing followers.

But back to Bill.

So I ask, why are some of these persons paid multi tens of millions per year to run shareholder-owned corporations? I?ll tell you: boardroom politics. Nothing more.

And if these individuals were not complicitly linked to and supported by the sell-side, many of them wouldn?t even have a job.

Agree with you on this one. Connections make sense. Hello again Mark Cuban. Hi Bill & Warren, bridge-playing friends.

Once securities traders can see the business model for a company (and its relationship with interest rates, the economy, and commodity prices), they can pretty much tell how the company?s metrics are going to play out for the time they will actually hold an unhedged stock in their portfolio, which in the case of the average professional investor is less than one year."

Interesting to note that the average professional investor trades companies like baseball cards. It seems that baseball cards are like stocks. Every year there is a new superstar, but only a few who stand the test of time.

Aren't baseball cards way down in value lately?

Filtering Noise with Digg, Slashdot, Alexia, IceRocket, Technorati, Bloglines, RSS, Google, Web 2.0 Technology, Ajax, Blogs, hmm... too much noise...

Arpit Ranka: "Responding to Noise
'There is lots of noise that comes with information and one needs to train himself to separate noise from information' -- Naseem Taleb (in substance)"

I have a problem in that once I look at a subject, I end up going in all directions to try and find information around that subject, related subjects, and non-related subjects. Talk about stressful!

Then comes blogs. The blogsphere is a very noisy place. Picture Beijing or Calcutta on the busiest day of the week. Most of the conversation is frivolous but still interesting. All of it is worth reading, except for the splogs (blog spam).

I spent most of tonight researching how to buy value stocks. Or it started out that way. Then the market looked overbought, so I pursued gold. Then gold looked overvalued and hard to sell, so I looked at bonds. Then I saw they were worth 4% and figured I'll keep my limited cash for awhile until I can dig through this.

Anyway, this article is a great summary on Value Investment Decision Making, and how people make decisions in general.

Decision Making - "One can evade reality but he cannot evade the consequences of evading reality."

Psychological tendencies (or) Noises Some of the most common are Availability Bias, Doubt avoidance tendency, Inconsistency avoidance tendency & Psychological denial

Tversky & Kahneman's Experiment: (K or xxK?)

Charlie Munger on Human misjudgment
"The brain of man conserves programming space by being reluctant to change, which is a form of inconsistency avoidance." (Inconsistency Avoidance Tendency)
I have long looked for insight by inversion in the intense manner counseled by the great Jacobi: 'Invert, always invert.' I sought good judgment mostly by collecting instances of bad judgment, then pondering ways to avoid such outcomes."

Interpretation of Financial Information
"If you want to stand out of the pack, you have to think out of the pack"--Ralph Wanger.

Buy & Sell Decision
Taking a loss should not make us feel like a stupid, if our process is right & taking a profit as genius, if our process if wrong.

Conclusion:
"You don?t need 99 percent of the information out there for investments?-Warren Buffett.

What is the 1% then, Warren?

Stocks or Bonds?

Stocks or Bonds?: "that will flow downhill, the digital book age is coming. In the WSJ (subscription required), it is reported that HarperCollins will host its own books. Google, Yahoo and others will be allowed to index. "

American McGees Personal Weblog

Maybe I'll get all of these together to have an id family reunion.

American McGee, other than having a name almost as cool as Zig Ziglar, worked on Doom & other id projects.

To start, I?ll be the first to admit that I know little about making games. Yeah, I?ve been doing it for 13 years, and have worked for the likes of id and EA, but hey, what do I know? Maybe I?ve faked my way through it all to this point! Actually, I just don?t think that anyone really knows anything about making games. The medium is too new. Sure, I know how to make a title that fits into an established genre; anyone working in the industry long enough knows how to do that. But to truly make a game, to build something from scratch, now that?s a scary thing, a tough thing.

Engine John Carmack

Armadillo Aerospace

This is what the other John, John Carmack is up to.

It would be interesting to note that there is a possibility that John invented the concept of blogging. By using the Finger protocol, people were able to view a unix .plan file of progress made with Doom, Quake, and other id software projects. Apparently people are still trying to pick his brain.

I get a pretty steady trickle of emails from people hoping for .plan file updates. There were two main factors involved in my not doing updates for a long time ? a good chunk of my time and interest was sucked into Armadillo Aerospace, and the fact that the work I had been doing at Id for the last half of Doom 3 development was basically pretty damn boring.

His blog hasn't been updated here in awhile, but hopefully he has other areas where he is posting.

I keep running across topics that are interesting to talk about, and the Armadillo updates have been a pretty good way for me to organize my thoughts, so I?m going to give it a more general try here. .plan files were appropriate ten years ago, and sort of retro-cute several years ago, but I?ll be sensible and use the web.

A little bit of background on Armadillo Aerospace.

"Armadillo Aerospace is a small research and development team working on computer-controlled LOX/ethanol rocket vehicles, with an eye towards manned suborbital vehicle development in the coming years. The team currently consists of a bunch of guys, a girl, and an armadillo named Widget. Our fearless leader, John Carmack, will lead us to space and, well, outer space. Please feel free to make yourselves at home and check out our journey."

I wonder if the other John is still working with Will, the frontman from the band Information Society. That VH1 Reuniting the Band show they did, and Will's comments afterwards on the internet were hilarious.

Whatever happened to Daikatana anyway? Should have stuck with a simpler name, like Sloth, or Destro, or Doomed'er.

John Romero's blog

I'm reading a really good book on the Doom creators from id software, John Romero & John Carmack called Masters of Doom. Other than the cheesy title, this gives some great insight into how two opposites create a company, an image, and a legacy that changed the landscape of gaming.

And brought us an even cheesier movie with The Rock.

I'm going to check out some of Romero's game recommendations... CLOUD looks interesting.

Ballmer can't get an Xbox

Digit LIVE news - Xbox 360 shortages 'to continue': "'He's right, he's a section 16 officer that operates under Sarbanes-Oxley,' said Moore. 'I can't give him one, even if I had one, because he can't accept it and I don't think he pre-ordered it from our local BestBuy, which he lives pretty close to, so Steve is [out of luck] right now.' "

I find it hard to believe that one of the richest guys in the world can't have someone call around to get him an Xbox 360. Sounds like PR-babble to me. Does anyone really believe these shortages are not manufactured? My friend just walked into a Zellers the other day and picked one up.

Wired News: The Hydrogen Gold Rush Is On

Wired News: The Hydrogen Gold Rush Is On: "Livingstone isn't the only person with a scheme to save the world through hydrogen. The last two years has seen a boom in hydrogen investment. In 2003, President Bush announced that the federal government would invest $1.2 billion into hydrogen over the next five years. General Motors has said it is spending at least a billion dollars on hydrogen and fuel-cell technologies, and companies like BP, Chevron and Shell are also making significant investments.

All that money has spawned a gold rush of inventors, all seeking the mother lode of cheap hydrogen. There's plenty of fool's gold in the dash for the moolah, and marvelous hydrogen inventions are shaping up as the perpetual-motion machines of a new age."

BBC NEWS | Technology | Data disasters dog computer users

But the data disaster at the top of the list, for its yuck factor if nothing else, is the story of the company that unearthed a laptop that had lain unused in a warehouse for almost a decade.

The laptop was needed because it was thought to hold valuable company information. When it was opened to get at the hard drive, it was found to be heaving with the husks of dead and decaying cockroaches.

My friend was wondering why his computer kept blue-screening. It wasn't a bug - it was a dead mouse in his computer case. Apparently it had made a mess on his video card. He Windex'ed it to death but it was never the same....

The best solution for data loss is prevention.... always back up your files.. but if you're just plain lazy and can't be bothered, keep some cash sacked away as OnTrack recovery insurance.

If anyone wants to look at something besides Lillian Taublib, please see my friend's web site at http://www.poppolar.com, who, by coincidence, is also from Brazil, though he's a Canadian now. Ok.. so I made up the discount... or did I...

If anyone from Canada was listening, I was on The Edge around 4:45 today. My 30 seconds of fame consisted of flubbing the words to a Green Day song and not winning Rock'em Sock'em #17. Pretty exciting stuff. I don't feel too bad, 2 other people lost too, the girl who got mad at the DJ because he gave me two tries and her only one, and the guy who was offered two choices and screwed it up.

FYI, the song was Holiday, by Green Day.

Lyric was "Hear the dogs howling out of key "

USPS - The 2005 Commemorative Stamp Program

American Scientists - McClintock, von Neumann, Feynman, Gibbs (4)

This issuance honors four American scientists: geneticist Barbara McClintock, mathematician John von Neumann, physicist Richard Feynman, and thermodynamicist Josiah Willard Gibbs.

For each stamp in this block of four, artist Victor Stabin created a collage featuring a portrait of the scientist and drawings that are associated with major contributions made by the scientist.

Text on the back of the stamps highlights their achievements.
Barbara McClintock (1902-1992) conducted maize plant research that led to her discovery of genetic transposition-the movement of genetic material within and between chromosomes. In 1983, this pioneering geneticist was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

John von Neumann (1903-1957) made significant contributions in both pure and applied mathematics, especially in the areas of quantum mechanics, game theory, computer theory and design. In 1956, the U.S. government presented the Enrico Fermi Award to this eminent mathematician.

Richard P. Feynman (1918-1988) developed a new formulation of quantum theory based, in part, on diagrams he invented to help him visualize the dynamics of atomic particles. In 1965, this noted theoretical physicist, enthusiastic educator and amateur artist was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Josiah Willard Gibbs (1839-1903) formulated the modern system of thermodynamic analysis. For this and other extraordinary achievements, Gibbs received some of the most prestigious awards of his era, including the Rumford Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
