Howard van Rooijen's Blog : Conchango.Build.TaskBuilder: A Visual Designer for Microsoft SDC Build Scripts
Conchango.Build.TaskBuilder: A Visual Designer for Microsoft SDC Build Scripts
TaskBuilder was my second xmas holiday project. I started it before AssemblyReflector, but then needed a mechanism for Code Generating all of the shape classes so that I could save hours of time by not having to write all the classes by hand. I used AssemblyReflector to generate the shapes from interfaces I had derived from the Microsoft.Sdc.Configuration.Build.1.2.xsd schema.
The genesis of TaskBuilder came from two sources – firstly my desire to really get to grips with Francois Vanderseypen’s amazing Netron Project and secondly my desire to make the creation and maintenance of build scripts something far less laborious and prone to easy mistakes.
The idea for a visual designer for creating Microsoft SDC Build Scripts has been floating around in my head for a long while; I just lacked the time and the tools. Then at the beginning of December I read Sam Newman’s post “FreeMind as an Ant GUI” and it made me realise that Netron would be the perfect enabler for build script visualisation.
The image below shows TaskBuilder editing the demo DailyBuild.Config file.

Virtual PC Guy's WebLog : Tweaking the performance of Virtual PC 2004
Tweaking the performance of Virtual PC 2004
Most people who use Virtual PC are running it on a uni-processor computer - and are trying to run other programs at the same time; however, Virtual PC can be very demanding on CPU resources at times. To help people deal with this - we have provided the following performance options under Virtual PC:
Run Virtual PC at maximum speed
Selecting this option will result in Virtual PC always getting the CPU time that it needs - and this is the option that provides the best performance inside of Virtual PC. The problem with this option is that if the virtual machine attempts to use 100% of its CPU it can bring other applications running on the host computer to their knees. It should be noted that a virtual machine does not have to be 'busy' in order to use 100% CPU. Some operating systems / applications (like DOS) do not implement an idle loop - which means that they will always use 100% CPU.
This option is best for users who are spending the majority of their time inside of the virtual machine and are only doing light processing on the host computer.
Give processes on the host operating system priority
With this option selected; Virtual PC will throttle its CPU usage whenever it is in the background. This allows the host system to remain responsive - but can result in terrible performance inside of the virtual machine (users have reported that operating system installs can take > 6 hours with this option selected and the virtual machine in the background - as opposed to the ~1 hour with the other performance option).
This option is best for users who are spending the majority of their time using the host operating system and are only doing light processing inside of the virtual machine. This option should *never* be selected if you are performing an OS installation inside of the virtual machine.
A third option is to choose the 'Run Virtual PC at maximum speed' option and then launch Virtual PC using the following command:
Start /low "" "Virtual PC.exe"
This will run Virtual PC at a lower priority than other applications, which will allow it to get all of the CPU resource that is available, while letting other host applications remain responsive. The problem with this option is that it can conflict with other low priority applications like Seti@home.
A final comment on all of this is that as Virtual PC runs all of its virtual machines on one thread - if you have a dual-processor computer - you can just select to 'Run Virtual PC at maximum speed' and not worry about performance as your host applications will run on the other processor.

The Bacon Show
The Bacon Show ONE BACON RECIPE PER DAY, EVERY DAY, FOREVER
This is wrong in so many ways.
I was at a destination wedding in the Dominican a couple of years ago, and they were serving the usual helpings of bacon stacked up on a plate. The next day they had only 'bacon toast', what appeared to me to be french toast & bacon bits. It was actually the toast they use to sop up the grease.
'scuse me for a second...
I couldn't get the salt taste out of my mouth for days, my cholesterol went through the roof, and I'm sure I lost about 5 years off my lifespan. (but there were 2 other guys who ate the same thing so I didn't feel too stupid)
I'm no longer a Bacontarian....

Geo F Trumper - shaving tips
Geo F Trumper - shaving tips A little off the usual tech stuff, some good tips on getting rid of that razor burn.
My barber owns the Terminal Barber Shop in Toronto, at Bay/Dundas. Talking to him yesterday I found out that he spent five years at Geo F. Trumper, one of the best barber shops in the world and the Royal Family's barber of choice. Not to mention Tunisia, Algeria, and Dubai.
Where else can you get a 40 GBP shave for $20 Canadian?

"At its best, life is completely unpredictable." - Christopher Walken
Actor Christopher Walken to run as Candidate in 2008 Presidential Race
For Immediate Release
New York - Early today, actor Christopher Walken, 62, held a private conference at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York in which he announced his intentions to run for the Presidency of the United States in the 2008 Election.
Said the Queens native, “I have always been a follower of politics. My father was friends with the mayor of Schodack (NY) back in the 1940’s. We would walk the streets of Schodack and the people, they would wave to him. The children adored him. That is what I love to be, a man of respect and love.”
From a statement by Walken's agent, Toni Howard: “Mr. Walken has greatly admired the celebrities who have entered politics and he wants to be able to give a good name and reputation to the acting community as well as the political community. As for going national with this news we have not made any plans for the immediate future."
Because Mr. Walken is currently contracted for more than one film production, the Walken campaign manager Michael Hansee admitted that there would be relatively minimal publicity at this early stage. "[Mr. Walken] has a full plate right now, acting in a number of different films, and can't start any personal campaign work until these obligations are fulfilled," he commented. "We're looking to spread the word and build a little support base with our website, in preparation for a full campaign in early 2007."
The campaign website is patriotic-themed, with the tag-line "To Get America Back on Track." Hansee stated that the campaign is hoping to drum up early support through their online presence, much like Howard Dean did in the 2004 race.
